Donald Trump Talks Tough on Trade in Vietnam
Donald Trump had some choice words for nations who don’t like to play by the rules over the weekend.
Speaking from communist-controlled Vietnam as part of his tour in Asia, the president doubled down on his ‘America First’ pledge. The address was done as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, a consortium which promotes the financial interests of Asian economies.
“We’re not going to let the United States be taken advantage of anymore,” Trump said. “I am always going to put America first the same way I expect all of you in this room to put your countries first.”
The speech was met with a lukewarm applause from an audience mainly consisting of CEOs in the region.
Trump’s position on trade marks a notable detraction from many of his predecessors, including both Republicans and Democrats. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump opposed the Trans-Pacific Trade Agreement, or TPP, a free trade pact which involved the United States and many Asian countries like China.
