After months of zero progress in the negotiation between President Donald Trump and Congressional Democrats regarding the border wall, the president finally decided to bypass Congress entirely and declare a national emergency in order to secure the funds needed to build the wall. In spite of the fact that everyone could see this declaration coming, Democrats are not too pleased with the outcome.
Now, the media is trying to paint Trump’s national emergency declaration as an unprecedented power grab, in spite of the fact that every president in the modern era has declared at least one national emergency during their term. Prominent Democrats are pushing this same narrative, and the legality of Trump’s national emergency declaration is almost destined to be decided in the Supreme Court.
It’s important to keep in mind, though, that a national emergency declaration was far from Trump’s first choice. By placing their personal vendettas against Trump ahead of the nation’s security, Democrats have forced his hand, and now they must live with the consequences.
There’s undoubtedly still a lot of battles left to be fought over Trump’s national emergency declaration and the border wall funding. For now, though, Trump has reminded the Democratic Party that when you only control one-sixth of the government, refusing to compromise is a good way to get bowled over.
