Senate hearings for the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to serve as Associate Justice for the Supreme Court began with political posturing and protest from Democratic lawmakers who have already signaled they will vote against him.
President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh, a conservative federal judge known to be a “textualist” of the U.S. Constutiton to succeed the outgoing Justice Anthony Kennedy. The outgoing justice has long had a reputation for being a “swing vote” on the court, meaning the selection of a committed conservative would solidify the Supreme Court’s right-leaning slant for a generation.
Democrats have been viciously opposed to Kavanaugh’s nomination since Trump made the announcement. Many senators have even gone on the record stating they will vote against the confirmation regardless of how the hearing goes. None of this matters, however, thanks to a parliamentary rule passed by the Democrats in 2014 which allows the Senate to confirm any judicial nomination with a simple majority vote.
In other words, Democrats buried themselves, and now they’re complaining about it.
