Democrats are Rapidly Moving Farther Left

There were plenty of lessons that Democrats could have learned from their defeat in 2016. Rather than recognizing that Hillary Clinton was a deeply flawed candidate who didn’t understand the struggles of most Americans, however, the lesson that most Democrats took away from the 2016 election was that Clinton was too moderate. The buyer’s remorse for cheating the far-left Bernie Sanders out of the Democratic nomination came within moments of Trump’s victory, and the Democratic Party has been moving steadily further to the left ever since.

In today’s new Democratic Party, politicians such as Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Elizabeth Warren have become the new faces of the movement. Two out of these three new standard bearers, though, are so far left that they don’t even claim to be Democrats at all, but rather socialists, while the third – Elizabeth Warren – isn’t very far off.

The party itself isn’t entirely to blame for this rapid move further left – many Democratic voters have moved much further to the left as well — especially young, college-educated voters who are now embracing socialism in alarming numbers. Had this not been the case, Sanders never even would have been able to be a challenge to Clinton in 2016, and it’s gotten a lot worse since then.

This rapid move to the far left may very well spell doom for the Democratic party, given the possibility that it’s only a very vocal minority that supports such extreme policies. Then again, if the Democratic party can actually manage to elect politicians such as Ocasio-Cortez, we could be in for a troubling future.
