In the past few years, the system of capitalism has come under fire like never before. Today, nearly an entire generation associates the term “capitalism” with the oppression of the poor and the enrichment of only the top 1%.
One politician – Bernie Sanders – came very close to making it all the way to the White House running on this same message. However, a little closer analysis reveals that capitalism is not at all the enemy that so many good-intentioned people make it out to be.
The reality is that nothing lifts the poor out of poverty like a capitalistic society. If you look at the standards of living in countries that have transitioned to a capitalistic system, you’ll see time and time again that it isn’t just the rich who are getting richer in these countries – the poor are getting richer as well, and at a much faster rate.
There is no flawless solution to poverty and income inequality. For now, though, capitalism is the best solution we’ve got by a long shot. Those wishing for the death of capitalism need to take a long, hard look at the track record of its alternatives then compare that with the illustrious record of success that capitalism is able to boast.
