2017 saw the passage of one of the largest tax cuts in history, greatly reducing the tax burden for people across the country. However, it now looks as if this first tax cuts bill is just the beginning of President Trump and the GOP’s tax cuts agenda.
The tax cuts in the bill that passed in 2017 are currently set to expire in 10 years. However, sometime in April, Congress is expected to vote on whether these tax cuts should be made permanent. If this happens, the tax cuts that Trump helped push through would become much more difficult for Democrats to do away with. Rather than waiting on them to expire, Democrats would be forced to pass a separate bill that negates the tax cuts entirely – a much more difficult task that could cost them the support of many middle-class Americans.
Thus far, tax reform has been by far the most popular thing that Trump and the GOP have accomplished during Trump’s Presidency. Hopefully, they will be able to ride that momentum even further and make these historic tax cuts a permanent part of our law.
