America’s “Safety Net” is Much More Abused Than You Think

We have a serious problem in this country. The problem is that we have a large majority of the population that believes the government has resources of its own. Despite the fact that the idea of a tax on your income is only a little more than a century old, we have a majority of the people thinking that this is normal. When the income tax was first introduced as a way to pay for the nation’s involvement in the First World War, we were told that it would be temporary.

Does that sound familiar? It should. We were told the Patriot Act would be temporary as well, and it looks as if it will be with us forever.

So, we have this progressive system of theft called taxes. Every couple of years we vote to decide how we want other people’s money to be spent. Some of us want other people’s money to be used to fund the military. ‘Our missiles are getting rusty,’ we say. Other’s say, ‘We would like to use other people’s money to rebuild infrastructure,’ because our ride to work is bumpier than we would like.

Then, there is the type of person who says, ‘I want to use other people’s money to make up for my inability to support myself.’ Even this, we’re not terribly bothered by. But what if we told you a significant number of those people are cheating the system?

Here’s John Stossel with more.
