A Step by Step Look at How Socialism Ruined Venezuela
There was a time not too long ago when Venezuela was one of the richest countries in South America. Thanks to its oil supplies, the Venezuelan economy flourished throughout the middle of the 20th century, and the country was even called an “economic miracle” by many experts.
Then, something changed. Venezuela began adopting more and more socialist policies. Hugo Chávez was elected as the leader of the country in 1998, and he took socialism in Venezuela to a new level. When Nicolás Maduro took over for Chávez after his death in 2013, Maduro implemented even more socialist policies, and the Venezuelan economy continued to deteriorate.
Today, Venezuela is in a state of disaster. The vast majority of Venezuelan citizens now live in poverty, and many have resorted to slaughtering stray dogs and cats just to put food on the table. One Venezuelan writer even went as far as to say that “Anyone in Venezuela would be happy to eat out of America’s trashcans. It would be considered gourmet.”
And yet, even with yet another example of how socialism ruins countries playing out right before our eyes, many Democratic leaders still continue to push for the United States to follow Venezuela down the same path. If the USA ever does fully embrace socialism, we can’t expect our results to be any better than that of Venezuela.
