Science has brought us so many advances, convenience, life-saving technologies and techniques it’s incontestable that our lives are immeasurably better than they would have been without it.
While science as an ideology certainly does clash with religious ideologies, science itself is not an ideology. Science is a method of exploration of the natural world. It is the product of the curiosity of Christian monks. These long bygone devotees of the gospel had the unique idea that since God’s creation is directly observable, perhaps humans could learn something about the mind of God by meticulously testing and observing His creation.
Since then, science and technology have driven changes to our lives and society that those monks probably never imagined. Science is such an immensely powerful tool, it may even have the potential to allow humans to conquer space, tap the power of whole stars, and even end mortality.
These possibilities, whether they are real or not- give the illusion that science has all the answers. This has lead many to subscribe to the mindset that scientists are always right about everything. It’s a mindset that the authoritarianism of public schools has helped to set up in so many people.
But when we assume that scientists are always right, we set them up as secular priests. When this happens, we lose sight of the fact that scientific research can come to wrong conclusions, that results can be skewed by dishonest scientists, and convincing yet fraudulent science can be intentionally created and paid for.
